Rejoice and celebrate! Today (23rd April)  is traditionally Shakespeare's birthday. It's also (2016) the 400th anniversary of his death. In his day all the marvellous female roles in his plays were played by male adolescents, and all-male productions are again becoming common. Meanwhile, great actresses from Sarah Bernhardt as Hamlet onwards, have successfully attempted his male roles. Below are pictures of modern dress and Elizabethan dress all-male productions of 'As You Like It', and a modern dress all-female production of 'Henry V' (Obviously I don't own any of them.) Enjoy, and celebrate the greatest English dramatist!
